 Abstract:  The Western Reserve Manuscripts is a collection of small manuscript accessions that have been donated to the Western Reserve Historical Society since its founding in 1867. These manuscripts often consist of one document but can include multiple items contained in one folder. This collection of material documents numerous subjects and themes in the history of Cleveland, Ohio, and the region of northeast Ohio known as the Western Reserve. The collection consists of advertisements, agreements, applications, articles, autobiographies, autograph books and autographs, biographical sketches, certificates, correspondence, deeds, diaries, drawings, envelopes, genealogies, histories, indentures, invoices, letters, lists, manuscripts, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes, papers, photographs, poems, receipts, reports, scripts, speech transcripts, telegrams, and other material. Western Reserve Historical Society library staff began to describe these manuscripts in this finding aid in 2015. This is an ongoing project that will be updated for public access as the project progresses in real time.

 Abstract:  Ada Watterson Yerkes was related to three families who settled early in the Western Reserve. The Harper family came from New York in 1798 and founded Harpersfield, Ohio. The Norton family came from New York before 1839 when Ada Yerkes maternal grandparents were married in Harpersfield. The Watterson family came from England in 1826 and settled in Warrensville, Ohio. Various family members served in the Civil War and were active in a number of business ventures, including the Gardner Gun Company of London, England and the Ogleby-Norton Company of Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, receipts, insurance policies, legal papers, genealogical material, drafts of a family history, diaries and notebooks relating to the Harper, Norton and Watterson families.

 Abstract:  The 187th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an army regiment organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, on March 2, 1865. It was ordered to Georgia where it performed provost duty at Macon until it was mustered out on January 20, 1866. The collection consists of volunteer description lists and accounts of pay and clothing for Company A.

 Abstract:  William Pendleton Palmer (1861-1927) was President of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio (1913-1927). The collection consists of American Civil War documents collected by Palmer, including military and personal correspondence, muster rolls, official orders, ordnance and quartermaster reports, casualty lists, memoirs, diaries, descriptions of the engagements in which various regiments took part, and papers dealing with veterans' organizations after the war. Half of the collection relates to Ohio volunteers, but there are papers from Union and Confederate regiments of thirty States. Includes material concerned with Negro regiments enlisted in the Southern States occupied by Union Armies, and a few references to the Mexican War and the 1850s. Collection features the James E. Taylor Sketchbook.

 Abstract:  Charles Whittlesey (1808-1886) was a soldier, lawyer, geologist, and historian who resided in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of correspondence, insurance and legal papers, financial papers, account books, diaries, memoranda, reports, invoices, orders, papers relating to his service as Colonel of the 20th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry; manuscript notes and writings on historic, scientific and religious topics, field notes and memoranda books from geological expeditions, and papers concerning his activities as agent for the Humboldt and Eagle River mining companies (1853-1859).

 Abstract:  John Devereux was a sea captain of Marblehead, Mass. John H. Devereux was an American Civil War general, engineer, railroad executive, and philanthropist, of Cleveland, Ohio. Henry K. Devereux was an engineer, real estate agent, industrialist, philanthropist, and harness-horse fancier, of Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, business, financial, and legal documents, genealogical data, ship's logs, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and other papers, of John Devereux, John H. Devereux, and Henry K. Devereux. Bulk of the collection relates to railroad construction and John H. Devereux's career with several railroads. Includes records (1895-1916) of the Gentlemen's Driving Club, and material relating to Henry K. Devereux's interest in trotting horses and harness racing and his activities as an official of several businesses. The collection also documents the role played by the railroad for the Union during the American Civil War.

 Abstract:  Picket Latimer and his brothers, Peter and John Mulford Latimer, were farmers in Huron County, Ohio. Picket and John also operated a general store, P. & J.M. Latimer, in Norwalk, Ohio. John's son, John Mulford Latimer, Jr., served as a captain in the 101st Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. The collection consists of photocopies of letters written to Picket Latimer regarding the business operations of his general store in the 1840s and copies of John Mulford Latimer, Jr.'s American Civil War service records.

 Abstract:  James Scott Jenkins (b. 1842) was a soldier in the Iowa Infantry during the American Civil War. He served as company clerk for the Department of the Gulf. In 1885 he was on the staff of the Governor of Iowa. The collection consists of a transcript of a court inquiry concerning a magazine explosion in Mobile, Alabama, orders, inspection reports, and lists of regiments and staff of the Department of the Gulf.

 Abstract:  The collection consists of letters, notes, memoranda, circulars, orders, broadsides, cartoons, maps, newspaper clippings, muster rolls, patriotic cards, and other papers relating to Union naval affairs, the Army of Mississippi, the Army of Tennessee, and Union and Confederate quartermaster and medical departments; records of the Gambier Council of the National Union League, correspondence and other papers of Ohio State officials, and correspondence from the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. This collection was collected from various sources by the Western Reserve Historical Society.
